Critical Thought and Christianity

"Gracious Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic Church....where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it." These words are found in the Book of Common Prayer as an honest and humble request made by the Church to God for divine leading in all matters. I believe in these words we find a wisdom that is so often forgotten by those who consider themselves followers of God, a wisdom which is a Divine gift and a part of what makes us human beings fashioned in the image of our creator. This gift is a realization of the absolute need for critical thought within our faith and worship communities and a realization that all can make errors, including the Church. It is the necessity of openness to correct those errors and mistaken paths when they are revealed to us. In Genesis we find the Torah's attempt of explaining the unexplainable, the creation of mankind and why we find ourselves in the state we have come to be. We read of God creating man from the lowly dust of the earth but ultimately breathing 'the breath of life' into his nostrils and bringing him to consciousness with the divine's very own breath and being.
